Opened in 2004 to host the country’s first ever Formula One race, the vast complex is located in the Jiading district, north-west of the city. The 5.451km circuit’s design draws inspiration from the Chinese character ‘shang’ and features 16 turns with a seating capacity of 200,000. It was designed by famous circuit architect, Hermann Tilke and features a twisty layout finishing with a very long back straight of almost 1.2km before a tight hairpin bend funnels the cars into the final two corners.
