After a well-deserved victory in wet conditions last time out in Shanghai, Jeffrey Lee and Alessio Picariello head to Qinhuangdao in strong form. Despite the Shougang GT Circuit in Qinhuangdao, China, being a new circuit, EWS Craft-Bamboo Racing has high expectations for the weekend ahead.
Last Time Out
Back in June, the #88 pair of Jeffrey Lee and Alessio Picariello scored a double podium, which included a stunning victory in Race 2. Picariello got off to an incredible start, decisively attacking 2 cars on the run to the first corner. He then produced a thrilling overtake on the outside to take the lead, no easy feat in the soaking conditions. Lee then took over and made no mistakes, keeping the gap despite the safety car intervention. The Taiwanese GT veteran defended the lead admirably through sheer determination in the closing laps, and crossed the line to take EWS Craft-Bamboo Racing’s second victory of the season.
China's new "Motorsport Valley"
The Shougang GT Circuit, which is a newly built circuit, is China GT Championship’s landmark event. The circuit, built in an old steel factory area, is dubbed as China’s “Motorsport Valley”. The centerpiece of the Shougang Motorsport Valley is the FIA Grade 2 GT Circuit, which is surrounded by research and development, automotive engineering and entertainment facilities. The Shougang Motorsport Valley also features a world’s first skywalk that allows spectators to get a unique, birds-eye perspective of the on-track action.
The Weekend Ahead
The weather this weekend in Qinhuangdao is forecasted to be mixed; dry in the practice sessions on Friday and rain expected on Saturday and Sunday. Temperatures are fairly stable, ranging from 24 to 27 degrees celcius. The engineers have their work cut out for them, given the freshly laid track surface and the changing weather conditions. Despite the variables, the team have confidence and are optimistic for another strong weekend in the China GT Championship.
Jeffrey Lee | Driver #88 Mercedes-AMG GT3
“We had a really good weekend in Shanghai a few months ago, taking a podium in race 1 and a win in race 2, and I’m heading to Qinhuangdao with high expectations. We have shown that the car is fast, and even though the Shougang GT Circuit is new, I have faith that we as a team will overcome these challenges and hopefully be at the front again.”
Alessio Picariello | Driver #88 Mercedes-AMG GT3
“Feels really good to be back with the team, and it’s been a good first half of the season so far. After our two victories this season, I think we can expect to fight at the front again with the pace that we’ve shown this year. We’ll keep working hard as this is a new circuit and a new challenge, and I’m looking forward to getting on track!”
