After undergoing a radical redesign to ensure its competitors safety on the circuit, the track returned with a drastically reduced length of 7.004km. Despite the cuts in length, the circuit still managed to retain its magic. The mix of long straights and fast corners, combined with a picturesque setting and notoriously changeable weather keeps it at the top of both drivers and spectators favourite circuit. Part of the magic of Spa is that it is known and respected as one of the most challenging in the world.

The 4.23-km race track was first opened in 1968. Lying in a narrow, alpine valley, it has a rather simple layout, with two long straights plus the sweeping and fast "Fahrerlagerkurve" ("paddock turn") at the bottom, and the narrow "Nockstein-Kehre" on the top. In spite of its simple layout, it garnered a fearsome reputation for the high speeds reached on the straights and the tricky "Fahrerlagerkurve".
